Speedway motorcycle racing is one of the oldest forms of organized motorcycle racing in the world, originating in the 1920s in Australia and England. Speedway racing is run on a dirt oval, typically 180 - 400 yards in length...the bikes are 500cc, single cylinder 4 valve engines that run on methanol, will go 0-60 in about 2.5 seconds, and have absolutely NO BRAKES! The races are a very quick 4 laps, and riders are literally inches from each other as they slide the bikes around the corners at full speed! There is also a format which "handicaps" the riders in 10 yard increments, based on their riding experience, this "handicap" format is very popular in the United States.
